Is this true or false? Can chocolate kill dogs?

I was eating chocolate one day and my sister's dog was begging for some. My brother told me if a dog eats chocolate it will kill them. So can chocolate actually kill dogs?

Just wondering, I like dogs.Is this true or false? Can chocolate kill dogs?
Yes, it can

We've all heard it, ';Don't give your dog chocolate it will kill him';. We'll how true is it you're probably wondering. Do I have to rush him to an emergency vet if he ate one of my M%26amp;M's?

The truth is chocolate contains theobromine that is toxic to dogs in sufficient quantities. This is a xanthine compound in the same family of caffeine, and theophylline.

The good news is that it takes, on average, a fairly large amount of theobromine 100-150 mg/kg to cause a toxic reaction. Although there are variables to consider like the individual sensitivity, animal size and chocolate concentration.

On average,

Milk chocolate contains 44 mg of theobromine per oz.

Semisweet chocolate contains 150mg/oz.

Baker's chocolate 390mg/oz.

Using a dose of 100 mg/kg as the toxic dose it comes out roughly as:

1 ounce per 1 pound of body weight for Milk chocolate

1 ounce per 3 pounds of body weight for Semisweet chocolate

1 ounce per 9 pounds of body weight for Baker's chocolate.

So, for example, 2 oz. of Baker's chocolate can cause great risk to an 15 lb. dog. Yet, 2 oz. of Milk chocolate usually will only cause digestive problemsIs this true or false? Can chocolate kill dogs?
Yes, though a small amount may just make them sick depending on the size of the dog and the type of chocolate. Small dogs are of course going to get sick or die with a smaller amount than large dogs. Baking chocolate is worse than a candy bar. You should never feed a dog chocolate even if it is a large dog eating milk chocolate. There is an alternative to give to dogs, carob, which is found in some dog treats.
Everyone says it poison to dogs or they are allergic. I have a 14 pound Dachshund and he's eaten an entire bag of Oreos off of the coffee table once - he's had lots of chocolate over the years (he's 10) and he's fine. It's never even made him sick. I don't give it to him on purpose, but he's manic about getting anything that is accidentally left out or dropped.
About 10% of dogs can't digest theobromine in chocolate. It is fatal in surprisingly small doses.

Problem is you can't tell if its toxic to your dog until they get sick, by which time it could be too late so don't risk it.

Doggy 'chocs' are mostly sugar, vanilla flavour and carob.
thats a True Flase answer

A smalll Tiny amount wont hurt

but a Large amount will best bet is to not feed it to the dog at all

Darker choclate also is more toxic the milk , white chocolate, semi sweet or bakers

yes, definately!

wel, not a small amount, but a 100g bar of chocolate can kill a lab!

there's some poison in choc that kills them so its safe just to never give it to them.

dogs will eat anything, they dont know that it will kill them so they will beg for it.

when you next have chocolate and your dog begs, give it a dog treat :)
True. It's just something that dogs have, There is something in the chocolate that reacts with their body. It's fine for us, but not for them. It's like us if we eat something that has expried by like 3 years. It kills them. They're body can't take it.

Sad, but true.
Yes. The toxicity level depends on three things, size of the pet, the type of chocolate eaten, and the amount of chocolate eaten.
Yes. There's a specific chemical called theobromine that can kill them. However, it does take relatively high doses.
Absolutely true. Baker's chocolate is the most toxic and only takes a little bit.

It's the amount that you feed them. Depending on the weight of the dog, a little won't hurt, but a lot can definitely do some damage!
this is true, chocalate has a ingrediant that dogs can't eat, its toxic to them, only humans and some other animals can eat chocalate.
Yes it can. I recommend doing a search on the internet since there are a ton of other food items that can be harmful to dogs like onions, raisins, macadamia nuts, etc.
It is true.

It may not kill them right away but it can happen. Depends on teh size of the dog and the quantity they eat.
well...My dog is quite big and he eats heaps (steaing it from my hands) he hasn't seemed to have any damage...yet lol

but my answer would be. Only if it eats LOTS.

We had a Sheltie and he ate lots of chocolate and didn't die till he was old. But he did throw up a lot.
Yes it can it really hurts yorkies so in the furure do not give chocolate to your dog.
its true but it depends on how much you give them. my science teacher always used to say ';the dose makes the poison';
I'm not sure, but play it safe, and don't give a dog chocolate.
